DIR/Floortime® workshop "How is it different from ABA? How do we get started?”

June 19, 2022 - 10:00-12:00JST

After the first event, many people expressed an interest in learning more about the DIR/Floortime® educational method for autism spectrum disorders.

Therefore, at the second Neurodiversity Salon, we have invited Ms. Colette Ryan, an expert therapist and training leader at ICDL, an education and training organization for DIR/Floortime®, to give a lecture on the differences between ABA and DIR/Floortime®.

DIR/Floortime® is not designed to promote normalization as is the case with standardized development. DIR/Floortime® is about honoring and respecting the beauty and uniqueness of each child and helping them grow and develop. DIR/Floortime® takes pride in and strives to understand the unique aspects of each child, helping them to flourish along their individual neurodiverse path. It is an approach that can be used in therapy, home, childcare, education, workplace, and care settings.

<From moderator Aki Oba>

I had the opportunity to sit in on a therapy session with Colette Ryan.

Although play begins without a plan, I was surprised to see how Colette always observes the child's condition and draws out the best practices for the day. She played while reading the child's tension and motivation, which changed from minute to minute, through facial expressions, breathing, and physical details.

The key points of involvement are Affect, Gesture, Intonation, Latency, and Engagement. We hope that by learning from Colette's workshop, you will become a partner in play that will excite your child.
